Fuji Cafe - Collierville TN

Fuji Cafe
Collierville, TN

Used to live in Memphis, TN, I had visited Fuji Cafe quite a few times before.  Frankly it is a little out of the way, about 10 minutes drive south east to Collierville, but its food quality always drive me to come back for more.

I visited Memphis again on business with a coworker.  I could not wait to bring him to this restaurant, and show him what I have been raving about all these times.

Locate in a small shopping center, there is not much to talk about the appearance of this restaurant from the outside.  The interior decoration of it is also very simple, yet homie.  I enjoyed fast and friendly service during my each visit.

I order sashimi dinner every time.  The one thing I can say is "Wow."  Just "Wow."  The fish is always fresh and moist.  The rice is always hot.  It also comes with miso soap and salad and California rolls. How do I suppose to finish all these food?

In this picture, you can also see a sushi dinner that my coworker ordered.  It is equally as big and as much food as what I got with my sashimi dinner.

As for food quality, this place is always superb and consistent; as for dollar value, there is no complaint here for sure.  This place gets my vote, and two thumbs up.

Sushi Axiom - Dallas TX

Sushi Axiom
Dallas, TX

I never knew this place exists until I went there with 6 of my girl friends (girl space friends, not girl friends) the other night before catching a show downtown.  I was told that this place used to be a Mexican restaurant, and after new owner pulled in boat loads of cash, it became another one of such owner's greater and better franchise creation.  As for the atmosphere, right off the bat when I walked in, I was impressed by those elegant yet tasteful decors. Obviously this restaurant is targeting at young adult audiences with credit cards and looking for place to swipe.  Okay, you got me there, let's see if your food can match up to it.

I ordered my usual chirashi bowl, rather than a full blown sashimi dinner, as we were kinda running tight on time.  (For all of you fellows who ever spend time with 6 other girls, you know exactly what I am talking about.)  The service was great.  The server kept on referring to all my girl space friends as "sweet heart": "What can I get for you sweet heart?" "Do you want another drink sweet heart?"  What's up with that?

After much anticipation, my chirashi bowl finally arrived.  The presentation was...hmmmm.... ok.  Just ok.  See for yourself.  Looking around, I was expecting something va-va-voom or fireworks flying out from my tuna.  Well that didn't happen.  The fish was fresh - very fresh.  I loved that fact that my chirashi was served with Japanese rice.  (For some of you who may not know that difference between Japanese and say non-Japanese rice:  Japanese rice are often more sticky.)  The chef placed seasame seeds and sea weeds on top of the rice bed, which gave it an additional kick to it.  Compare to what I paid, the portion was just right.  The chef was not stingy, or I would not have found octopus in my bowl.

My chiashi bowl did not come with mizo soup or salad, which is kinda a normal practice for other Japanese restaurants/establishments.  That kinda set me back a little.

Will I be back?  I guess so.  It is a nice place after all.

Who is Joe? (Better yet, why am I here?)

My work sends me to many different cities.  Frankly, I don't care for travel; but since I have to, I may as well take advantage of it.
Every city I go, I try to visit as many sushi restaurants as possible.  From high class restaurant, to hole-in-a-wall; from Japan to U.S.; from shopping center food court to side of the road.  As long as you serve sashimi, I am there.
I have been to many of those establishments where I cannot wait to go back; I have been to many others that are unfortunately forgettable.

Why sashimi?  Look.  I am not rich.  If I am paying $20-$30 for my meal, I am expecting a little more than a little bitty piece of fish sitting gracefully on top of a pile of rice, which has been by the way squeezed and molded artistically by someone who may or may not have just finished his/her business in the back.  Give me those giant pieces of raw fish, swimming in a pool of soy sauce with tons of wasabi.  Now we are talking.

At this blog, you are not expecting beautiful writings, perfect grammar.  But you are expecting honest (sometimes way too honest) opinion, about some of those establishments that I have visited.  After all, I am just a regular joe, who loves sashimi.

Share with me your experience.  Tell me where to go in my next visit.  I may be that guy who sits next to your table, who will not stop texting on his iPhone the whole time.  You never know.
